Luxury brand Vertu has unveiled the Alphafold, a foldable smartphone starting at $6,880 that aims to carve out a new niche in the executive market. The device is powered by an AI agent designed to integrate with enterprise software, representing Vertu’s most significant attempt yet to find relevance in the age of AI. By targeting high-level executives with a tool for managing business operations on the move, the company is betting that specialized AI workflows can justify its ultra-premium pricing and revive its brand legacy.
Enterprise AI in Your Pocket
The device’s core is the Hermes Agent, which can connect to enterprise systems like ERP and CRM to coordinate tasks through natural language. Vertu claims the agent can route requests across multiple large language models, including those from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, and integrate with over 80 applications. To address privacy concerns, the Alphafold includes a proprietary A5 security chip to isolate sensitive data and can process certain information locally. However, the company confirmed its security architecture has not yet undergone third-party audits, though it is on the product roadmap.- Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4
- Displays: 8.05-inch foldable inner screen, 6.53-inch outer screen
- Battery: 6,500mAh
- Cameras: Triple rear setup with 50MP primary and ultrawide sensors
- Durability: Hinge rated for up to 650,000 folds
A Niche Within a Niche
The Alphafold enters a challenging market where foldable devices constitute less than 2% of global smartphone shipments, according to IDC. While the larger screens of foldables are well-suited for productivity, industry analysts note that enterprise AI adoption on mobile devices lags behind computers, with IT decisions still primarily driven by ecosystem support rather than AI features. Vertu’s success will depend on its ability to convince a small but affluent customer base that its vision of an enterprise AI agent is not just a novelty, but an essential tool for modern business leadership.Vertu is betting that a highly specialized enterprise AI agent can create a defensible, ultra-premium market, justifying luxury hardware in an industry where mainstream manufacturers remain focused on consumer-grade AI features.
