Caller identity platform Truecaller has launched a new family protection feature worldwide, allowing a designated group administrator to monitor and intervene in potential phone scams targeting family members. The feature, now available in key markets like India, enables an admin to receive alerts when a member receives a call flagged as fraudulent and, for Android users, to remotely terminate the call. This move directly addresses the rising tide of phone-based fraud, which Truecaller reports included over 7.7 billion identified scam calls last year, by creating a shared security net for small family or friend groups.
The free feature allows for groups of up to five members. Once permissions are granted, the admin receives notifications of suspicious calls but cannot view a member's non-spam call logs or SMS history. While fraud alerts work across both iOS and Android, the critical function of remotely ending a call is exclusive to members using Android devices. Additionally, Android users can grant admins permission to view real-time status like battery level or whether the person is walking or driving, which the company positions as a tool for checking on elderly relatives without being intrusive. Admins can also create and share a universal blocklist for the group.
This product expansion comes at a critical time for Truecaller, which faces significant business challenges. The company's stock has fallen over 80% in the last year, with operating profitability and ad revenue in sharp decline. It also faces existential competition from government-mandated systems like India's Caller Name Presentation (CNAP). By moving into family safety, Truecaller is attempting to evolve beyond a simple caller ID utility into an essential service. The company is also exploring deeper AI integration to screen calls for scam-related keywords and automatically disconnect them, signaling a strategy to build a stronger user dependency based on proactive protection rather than just identification.
Amidst significant financial pressure and competition from native caller ID solutions, Truecaller's expansion into family safety is a calculated pivot. By empowering users to protect their relatives from scams, the company is attempting to transform from a replaceable utility into an indispensable family service, creating a deeper product moat built on trust and shared security.
