OpenAI is expanding its advertising business by integrating visual display ads directly into ChatGPT. The company announced that ads will begin appearing alongside images users generate, marking a significant step in the monetization strategy for its widely used AI chatbot. The move is aimed at building a sustainable business model for its free and low-cost subscription tiers and comes as competition from free AI services, like Meta’s agentic Muse app, continues to grow. The new ad format will initially launch in the U.S. later this month with a test group of advertisers.

OpenAI has stressed that the new ad units will be clearly labeled and are designed not to influence the model's outputs. This expansion is supported by a major push to build out a robust adtech infrastructure. The company is broadening its measurement tools and partner ecosystem to provide advertisers with familiar metrics and controls. This includes new partnerships for attribution, measurement, and brand safety, positioning ChatGPT as a more mature platform for digital advertising campaigns.

New Adtech Partnerships and Tools

  • Click Attribution: Solutions from AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Branch, Singular, and others.
  • Advanced Measurement: Full-funnel partners including Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL.
  • Geo-Based Experiments: Collaborations with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic.
  • Brand Suitability: Evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify (DV) and Integral Ad Science (IAS).

By wooing advertisers with visual formats and a suite of measurement tools, OpenAI is working to capitalize on its reported 1.2 billion weekly users once the program rolls out globally. However, the introduction of ads risks disrupting the user experience, a friction that may serve the dual purpose of pushing more casual users to upgrade to a paid, ad-free subscription. This strategy reflects a critical balancing act for AI platform companies: how to fund immense operational costs without alienating the user base that makes the platform valuable in the first place.

OpenAI's foray into visual ads isn't just about near-term revenue; it's a strategic move to construct a full-fledged adtech platform around its massive user base, directly challenging established digital advertising giants. By simultaneously building out measurement and brand safety tools, the company is laying the groundwork to convince major advertisers that its AI environment is not just large, but also a viable and safe channel for significant budget allocation, potentially at the expense of a frictionless experience for free-tier users.
