NVIDIA Explores Deeper Financial Role to Back Nscale's Anthropic Data Center

NVIDIA is reportedly in talks to guarantee billions in debt financing for Nscale's massive planned data center, a facility dedicated to AI firm Anthropic. This potential move into co-signing construction loans marks a significant strategic shift for the chipmaker, underscoring the intense capital pressures within the AI infrastructure sector. As investors grow wary of the colossal costs involved, NVIDIA appears to be taking more direct action to ensure its key customers can build the facilities necessary to house its next-generation processors.

The Details of the Deal

The proposed arrangement is structured as a residual value guarantee. Should Nscale default on its construction payments for the West Virginia campus, NVIDIA would step in, temporarily assume control of the facility, and help find a new buyer and tenant. This is a departure from NVIDIA's previous support, which primarily covered chip purchases and leases. The stakes are immense, with Anthropic's contract for the first building alone valued at $44.6 billion. This initial phase is a 460-megawatt facility expected to utilize NVIDIA’s upcoming Vera Rubin chips.

  • Deal Type: Residual Value Guarantee
  • Beneficiary: Nscale (AI Cloud Provider)
  • End Customer: Anthropic
  • Project Scale (Phase 1): $44.6 billion, 460-megawatt facility
  • Key Technology: NVIDIA Vera Rubin chips

Securing the AI Demand Pipeline

This financial intervention is a calculated move to stabilize a key partner and lock in future revenue. So-called 'neoclouds' like Nscale, which rent out AI compute without a diversified, cash-rich core business, are facing significant investor pressure. By backstopping the project, NVIDIA helps secure a critical demand channel from Anthropic, one of the largest purchasers of AI compute. The discussions also surface as both Nscale and Anthropic pursue IPOs while facing questions about their financial stability and ability to fund their ambitious expansion plans.

NVIDIA's potential co-signing of construction debt is less about real estate and more about forward-selling its future chip generations. By underwriting the physical foundation of the AI cloud, NVIDIA is vertically integrating its risk to guarantee that massive, capital-intensive customers like Anthropic remain locked into its ecosystem.
