Microsoft, Google, and Amazon Web Services have confirmed that Anthropic's Claude models will remain available to their enterprise customers, quelling concerns after the U.S. Department of Defense designated the AI startup a 'supply-chain risk.' The assurances provide crucial clarity for the numerous businesses that have integrated Claude into their workflows through these major cloud platforms, signaling that the fallout from Anthropic's dispute with the Pentagon will be largely contained to the defense sector.
The unusual designation was imposed after Anthropic refused to provide the Pentagon with unrestricted access to its technology for military applications the company deemed unsafe, such as fully autonomous weapons. In response, both Microsoft and Google stated their legal reviews concluded the restriction is narrowly focused. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that Claude can remain available "to our customers — other than the Department of War — through platforms such as M365, GitHub, and Microsoft’s AI Foundry." Similarly, Google noted that Anthropic's "products remain available through our platforms, like Google Cloud" for non-defense work.
This coordinated messaging from the world’s largest cloud providers effectively insulates the broader commercial AI market from the direct consequences of the Pentagon's action. The incident underscores the growing friction between the safety-oriented principles of some leading AI labs and the operational demands of military agencies. By publicly backing the continued availability of Claude for commercial use, the tech giants are helping to preserve Anthropic's market position and reinforcing a clear boundary between enterprise AI services and direct defense contracting.
The unified stance of Microsoft, Google, and AWS establishes a critical precedent, signaling that major cloud platforms will act as buffers to protect the stability and continuity of the commercial AI ecosystem from specific, targeted government and military restrictions.
