Meta is aggressively expanding the capabilities of its personal AI agent, Muse, just weeks after its initial launch. At the company's annual Connect event, CEO Mark Zuckerberg detailed a strategy that positions Muse as the centerpiece of its consumer AI efforts, introducing a suite of new integrations that span its hardware and software ecosystems to embed the agent more deeply into users' daily activities.

New Features for Meta's Muse Agent

The agent, which runs on Meta's multimodal AI model Muse Spark, will gain several key functions designed to make it a constant background assistant. To facilitate its autonomous operations, Muse will be assigned its own email address, allowing users to forward requests or include it on threads for automated handling. This push for deep integration is further supported by an open platform for developers to build custom "connectors," aiming to scale its functionality across a wide range of third-party services.

  • Digital Avatars: Users can create and interact with a real-time video avatar for Muse, powered by the new Muse Realtime Avatar model.
  • Smart Glasses Integration: Muse will be accessible on Meta AI glasses, allowing users to issue voice commands for tasks like booking appointments or identifying products.
  • Desktop Automation: The agent is coming to Mac, where it will be able to operate applications to automate complex computer-based workflows on a user's behalf.
  • E-commerce Connectors: New partnerships with Shopify, Stripe, Best Buy, Walmart, and others will enable direct shopping and payments facilitated by the agent.

Meta's strategy with Muse presents a direct challenge to agentic AI from competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic, but with a distinct consumer-first and hardware-integrated focus. By leveraging its massive user base and devices like smart glasses, Meta is building a comprehensive ecosystem rather than just a standalone software tool. The business model—initially free, with a plan to later take a small fee from transactions—is designed to lower the barrier to entry and drive widespread adoption, creating a new potential platform for AI-driven commerce and services.

Meta's strategy is not just to build an AI assistant but to create a pervasive, integrated ecosystem where Muse acts as the primary interface for digital tasks and commerce. By connecting its agent to its hardware (glasses) and a growing network of third-party e-commerce partners, the company is positioning itself to capture value from transactions it facilitates, differentiating its monetization approach from the subscription models of its primary competitors.
