Copilot is ‘for entertainment purposes only,’ according to Microsoft’s terms of use

Microsoft is facing scrutiny over its Copilot terms of use, which state the AI assistant is “for entertainment purposes only” and should not be relied upon for important advice. The disclaimer, last updated in October 2025, creates a notable contrast with the company's aggressive push to sell Copilot subscriptions to corporate customers as a serious productivity tool. This discrepancy highlights the persistent legal and reliability challenges AI companies navigate while marketing their systems for mission-critical business applications.

In response to questions, a Microsoft spokesperson characterized the phrasing as “legacy language,” telling PCMag that the terms no longer reflect how the product is used today. The company confirmed it will alter the language in its next update to better align with Copilot's current role as an integrated assistant across its enterprise software suite. The existing terms warn users that Copilot “can make mistakes” and that they should use it “at your own risk,” a standard liability waiver that nonetheless appears at odds with its enterprise branding.

This practice of legally downplaying a product's capabilities is not unique to Microsoft. Other major AI developers, including OpenAI and xAI, incorporate similar disclaimers, cautioning users not to treat model outputs as a “sole source of truth or factual information.” The industry-wide pattern points to a core tension between the powerful capabilities advertised to secure market share and enterprise contracts, and the underlying legal necessity to mitigate liability for the inevitable inaccuracies and hallucinations these systems produce.

The 'entertainment only' clause, though dismissed as legacy language, reveals the persistent gap between the marketing of AI as a reliable enterprise tool and the legal realities of its current, often unpredictable, capabilities.
