Eighteen months after selling his startup to AMD for $665 million, Finnish entrepreneur Peter Sarlin has launched QuTwo, a new venture aimed at preparing enterprises for quantum computing. Backed by his family office, PostScriptum, the company is building an AI-focused operating system that functions as an orchestration layer between classical and quantum hardware. This approach is gaining early commercial traction, with partners like fashion retailer Zalando already using the platform to develop advanced AI tools, signaling enterprise appetite for a practical bridge to a quantum future without waiting for the underlying hardware to mature.
QuTwo's core product, QuTwo OS, is designed to be hardware-agnostic, routing AI workloads to the most appropriate computing resource, be it classical, quantum, or a hybrid environment. This flexibility allows it to leverage 'quantum-inspired' computing today, which uses classical hardware to simulate quantum behaviors for immediate efficiency gains. The startup is staffed by a team of over 30 scientists and industry veterans, including IQM co-founder Kuan Yen Tan and former Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark, blending deep quantum expertise with enterprise software experience. Sarlin confirmed the company already has 'design partnerships' valued in the tens of millions with customers co-developing the product.
By focusing on the software layer first, QuTwo is carving out a distinct position in the AI ecosystem. Its model allows large companies like Zalando and Finnish financial group OP Pohjola to invest in quantum readiness and develop next-generation applications without making a direct, high-risk bet on specific quantum hardware. This strategy of abstracting away the hardware complexity could accelerate enterprise adoption of quantum-powered AI, positioning QuTwo as a key enabler that allows businesses to focus on application-level problems while the underlying technology evolves.
QuTwo's strategy of building a hardware-agnostic OS and securing large enterprise 'design partnerships' demonstrates a pragmatic commercial path for quantum computing. By focusing on the immediate software and orchestration challenges, the company is capturing enterprise value long before quantum hardware becomes mainstream, effectively selling readiness and a gradual transition path rather than a distant hardware promise.
