Anthropic says Claude Code subscribers will need to pay extra for OpenClaw usage

Anthropic is altering its subscription terms for its Claude Code assistant, requiring users to pay extra for access via third-party tools like OpenClaw. According to a customer email, subscribers can no longer use their existing plan limits for these external applications and must instead use a separate pay-as-you-go option. The policy change, which took effect April 4, comes shortly after OpenClaw's creator, Peter Steinberger, joined competitor OpenAI, placing Anthropic’s move squarely in the spotlight of the intensifying rivalry between the two AI firms.
Anthropic's head of Claude Code, Boris Cherny, stated that the company's subscription models were not designed for the usage patterns generated by these third-party harnesses and framed the decision as a measure to manage growth sustainably. He cited "engineering constraints" as a primary driver for the change, which will eventually apply to all third-party integrations, not just OpenClaw. To ease the transition, the company is offering full refunds to subscribers. The announcement, however, drew criticism from Steinberger, who claimed he attempted to negotiate with Anthropic and suggested the timing was a calculated move to lock out open-source tools after integrating some of their features.
This policy shift illustrates a growing tension between centralized AI platform providers and the open-source developer ecosystem that builds upon them. By monetizing API access through third-party tools separately, Anthropic is asserting tighter control over its resource allocation and business model. The move could compel developers to choose between the convenience of integrated, platform-native tools and the flexibility of open-source harnesses, which now come with a direct, variable cost. It signals a maturation of the market where AI companies are increasingly focused on managing operational costs and directing user traffic through their own curated experiences.
