Project ProtoStar Aims to Standardize Scientific Data for AI

A coalition of universities, research organizations, and industry partners has announced Project ProtoStar, a new initiative designed to make publicly funded scientific research more accessible and useful for AI development. The project, whose partners include Carnegie Mellon University and Hugging Face, aims to solve the persistent problem of scientific data being publicly available but not practically usable. By establishing standards for releasing datasets, models, and code in AI-ready formats, ProtoStar intends to bridge the gap between vast government research investments—totaling around $190 billion annually in the U.S.—and their real-world application in machine learning.

How It Works: Partners and Challenges

The initiative operates through a formal partnership structure where organizations agree to release scientific artifacts on open infrastructure. Hugging Face serves as the primary infrastructure partner, with a growing number of universities and research groups joining the effort. The founding partners represent a significant cross-section of the academic and open science community:

  • University Partners: Carnegie Mellon University, Purdue University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Arizona State University, The George Washington University (via the Open Forum for AI).
  • Infrastructure Partner: Hugging Face.
  • Community Partner: The Open Research Community Accelerator (ORCA).
  • Founding Supporter: The Astera Institute.

To demonstrate the value of this approach, Project ProtoStar will host a series of open challenges. The first, hosted by Carnegie Mellon, is the Climate Risk Intelligence Challenge, which invites participants to use historical weather data to improve predictions of urban climate conditions. This and future challenges are designed to produce concrete examples of how AI-ready data can accelerate scientific discovery while also identifying technical barriers and best practices for data sharing.

The Impact: From Data Archives to Active Resources

The project addresses a critical bottleneck in the AI for science ecosystem: data usability. While repositories like those from the NIH see millions of downloads, much scientific data remains scattered in legacy formats without the metadata needed for reuse. By promoting well-documented, machine-actionable artifacts, ProtoStar seeks to turn static data archives into active resources. The demand is clear, with Hugging Face reporting that new science datasets on its platform tripled in the first nine months of 2026 compared to 2025. This initiative could establish a practical framework for research institutions to not only meet public-access mandates but also substantially increase the scientific and economic value of their work.

Project ProtoStar shifts the open science conversation from mere data availability to active data utility. By creating a standardized playbook for converting publicly funded research into machine-actionable assets, it addresses the critical 'last mile' problem that has long hindered the application of AI to complex scientific domains.
