A Mainframe Shortfall Hits the Bottom Line
IBM reported quarterly earnings that fell significantly short of Wall Street expectations, triggering the company's largest single-day stock decline in its history. Despite generating substantial revenue, the miss was so severe that CEO Arvind Krishna issued a preliminary warning to investors last week. The primary cause for the poor performance was a steep, unexpected drop in sales for the company’s high-margin mainframe business, as clients apparently diverted funds to contend with rising costs for other AI-related data center hardware.

The financial results highlight the scale of the problem. While the company remains profitable, the downturn in its core infrastructure unit was stark, particularly the 42% drop in mainframe sales. This has a multiplier effect, as CFO Jim Kavanaugh noted that IBM typically earns $3 in software revenue for every $1 of mainframe hardware sold. Company leadership explained that a small number of key customers—described as 'tens'—postponed their mainframe purchases to absorb cost increases of 15% to 30% on other essential gear like PCs and servers.
