Google has integrated its latest music generation model, Lyria 3, into the Gemini application, allowing users to create short audio tracks from text or image prompts. The feature, now in beta, makes AI music creation widely accessible within the company's flagship AI product. This move puts Google in more direct competition with a growing field of specialized AI music tools and marks a significant expansion of Gemini's multimedia capabilities beyond text and image generation.

Powered by Google DeepMind's Lyria 3 model, the tool can generate 30-second tracks complete with lyrics and custom cover art. According to the company, the model improves on previous versions by offering more creative control over style and tempo. A key technical component is the mandatory embedding of SynthID, an imperceptible digital watermark that identifies the audio as AI-generated. The Gemini app has also been updated to detect this watermark in uploaded audio files. The feature is available for users 18 and older across several languages, with paid subscribers receiving higher usage limits.

By deploying this technology in a mainstream consumer app, Google is accelerating the public’s interaction with generative audio while simultaneously attempting to set a standard for content attribution with its SynthID technology. While Google states the feature is designed for original expression and not to mimic specific artists, its widespread availability will likely intensify the ongoing industry debate over copyright, artistic ownership, and the role of AI in creative fields. The strategy appears focused on normalizing AI-generated content for casual, everyday use cases, such as custom soundtracks for social media posts or personal messages.

Google is leveraging its Gemini app as a primary distribution channel to normalize casual AI music creation, embedding its SynthID watermarking as a foundational standard for synthetic media before the market fully matures.
